More and more newer vehicles are equipped with technologies capable of anticipating hazards, correcting a vehicle’s path, or braking automatically. These technologies are known as ADAS, which stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
What exactly is ADAS?
ADAS is not a single device, but a set of cameras, radars, and sensors installed in various locations on the vehicle—often behind the windshield, in the bumper, or on the side mirrors.
These components continuously collect information about the car’s surroundings (other vehicles, pedestrians, road markings, traffic signs) and transmit it to an onboard computer, which decides whether to alert the driver or intervene directly in the driving process.
The Main ADAS Features in Newer Vehicles
Depending on the vehicle’s model and year, ADAS may include several features, such as:
- Automatic emergency braking, which slows down or stops the vehicle if a collision is detected
- Lane-keeping assist, which slightly corrects the steering if the vehicle drifts out of its lane
- Adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts speed based on traffic conditions
- Blind-spot detection, which alerts the driver to the presence of a vehicle not visible in the side mirrors
- Parking assist, often paired with sensors at the rear of the vehicle
Why do these systems need to be recalibrated ?
All ADAS functions rely on the precise alignment of cameras and sensors relative to the vehicle’s axis. A windshield replacement, even a minor collision, or a simple suspension adjustment can be enough to shift this alignment by a few millimeters—a deviation invisible to the naked eye, but sufficient to skew the distance or trajectory measurements used by the system.
That is why recalibration is recommended after such work, to ensure that the sensors continue to operate according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
